Solution for collecting, processing, analyzing and presenting data from land-based fish farming. The solution collects all sensor data and fish health data and helps the farm optimize production and analyze and control fish health.

The challenge

Land-based aquaculture has the potential to eliminate the environmental and health challenges associated with traditional marine farming methods. By operating in closed systems with full control over environmental parameters such as temperature and water quality, mortality can be reduced and fish health can be improved.

To ensure optimal utilization of the facility and the highest possible quality of the fish, it is desirable to have full control over all data from the facility, ranging from temperature and nitrogen content to feed consumption and fish growth. Additionally, there has been a desire for a planning system that can help maximize the utilization of the facility. To achieve this, a comprehensive system has been sought that provides operators and others with full control over all data, thereby offering insights and opportunities for advanced analyses.

The solution

The solution includes the automatic collection and storage of all possible sensor data. Additionally, it features a mobile-based module for the registration of manual data. All this is consolidated into an advanced analysis tool, which provides the capability to view standardized reports as well as create custom reports and analyses tailored to most use cases.

The solution also includes a planning system that automatically calculates the optimal production plan based on the best possible utilization of the aquaculture facilities to optimize fish health, fish quality, and economic outcomes.

Technology

The solution is cloud-based, and built in Microsoft Azure. The data platform is built with DataBricks. For data storage Azure Data Lake Storage and Azure SQL Database are used.

On top of the platform, several APIs have been built with FastAPI (Python) to distribute data to applications for visualization. Azure functions have been developed for integration with various source systems at Rjukan. All solutions are set up with a high level of security, with authentication against Azure Entra Id at all levels and VPN tunneling between on-prem services and cloud services.

Integrations

The solution requires a number of integrations to function. Among these are:

  • Integrated with the feeding system via the OPC-UA protocol
  • SCADA solution sends real-time data to Azure SQL
  • Mobile app for manual data entry via GraphQL API
  • Automated reporting to the Norwegian Food Safety Authority via AltInn

Methodology

We use an agile project methodology based on Scrum with 2-week sprints. The project manager and scrum master from Green Digital work closely with the customer's product owner to define user stories and conduct user tests on the site.
